Whitfield Aspen School is the District Special School for the Dover area for pupils with profound, severe or complex learning needs.
We are funded by the Local Authority to provided an outreach service working in partnership with our mainstream colleagues in order to support pupils with additional educational needs (AEN) within the main-stream sector.
The outreach service is delivered by experienced classroom teachers or senior teaching assistants and is part of the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service for the Dover District. The advice for schools and early years providers, in partnership with other specialist services, is intended to support the development of the school’s own expertise and resources to meet pupils needs. Referral from school SENCOs regarding an individual pupil should be through the LIFT process. If you have an urgent matter that cannot wait until the next LIFT meeting then contact the number at the top of the page for an initial discussion.
Outreach staff are sensitive to the fact that meeting the needs of pupils with AEN within mainstream schools is often challenging and they seek to offer practical support to ensure that the pupil’s needs are best met.
Support offered includes:
· Relevant curriculum access and differentiation
· Targets and the learning environment
· Multisensory approaches
· Manual handling
· Classroom management issues
· Appropriate teaching strategies relevant to specific needs
